Content Details
Intermediate Course Goal: To work through pre-selected poems from Phaedrus’ corpus of writings.
The proposed goal is designed to give us something to work towards and something interesting to talk about. Much of the discussions will be done in Latin!(Though you should feel free to ask questions in English. We want you to learn as much as you possibly can. I will also take time to explain some concepts in English.)
The classes will touch upon a variety of prearranged subjects such as the family, animals, Roman gods, the weather, as a means for working towards reading and comprehending some of Phaedrus’ poems however, the discussions are free to wander in accordance with the interest of the group. You are encouraged to ask questions and learn as much as you can!
Phaedrus was a first-century Roman poet who translated Aesop’s fables into Latin. Though not strictly classical, his works are, in my opinion, very approachable intermediate texts.
Who is Intermediate?
For the purposes of this course, an intermediate student is one who
- has at least been introduced to most of the very basic Latin grammar i.e. the five declensions, most tenses and moods, the most common uses of each case. (this does not mean you have mastered all of these subjects and could reproduce or recognize them on your own with ease, just that you are familiar with the concepts.)
- Has a strong core vocabulary and is quite familiar with words of the highest frequency in Latin i.e. conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, and the most common verbs, nouns, and adjectives.
- Can express and understand basic concepts without resorting to a lexicon.
- Could read the first 16 chapters of Familia Romana with relative ease. The remaining chapters may be read with difficulty, but you are familiar with concepts addressed in the later chapters, such as, result/purpose clauses.
- Check out our intermediate and advanced spoken Latin videos on Youtube to give you a better idea of the difficulty of the course.
These are not strict rules about who is allowed to join this group, but, as guidelines, are only meant to give you an idea of how difficult the course will be. The term “intermediate” could be applied to a range of students.
