Erasmus’s Latin Paraphrases on the New Testament are an excellent resource for anyone looking to improve both their knowledge of Scripture and their grasp of the Latin language. The Paraphrases are, in a loose sense, retranslations of the New Testament into a Latin that embodied a character more reminiscient of Latin’s Golden Age. The language contained, however, is nevertheless simple, in imitation of the original Gospels.
Erasmus’s goal was to render the message of the Gospels more clear, and these Paraphrases can also be considered a genus of commentary, as they not only rephrase the passages of the Gospel but also expand and elaborate upon more difficult ones.
This edition of Erasmus’s Paraphrases has been copied and reformatted and is complete with a Latin preface by Ethan, Erasmus’s dedicatory epistle to King Francis of France, the Life of St. Mark by St. Jerome and Eusebius, the text of the Paraphrases, an Appendix containing the official censures of the University of Paris and Erasmus’s Responses, Ethan’s Annotations on the text, and a Index of names.
